Black hair flying behind her, perspiration streaming from terror-marked features, Dian the beautiful raced across the lush ground cover. Her legs were slim and shapely, yet as firmly muscled as those of a man. Her garment, a single, roughly tanned piece of sabertooth tiger-skin, did little to conceal the luscious curves of her form that so inflamed the desires of her pursuer.

Not more than an easy spear throw behind, Hooja the sly one kept pace with his fleeing prey. A crudely hewn spear with chipped stone head swung from one hand, but though Hooja could have brought the girl to earth with a cast of his weapon, such was not his intention. He intended to have her for his plaything, and his aim was not so fine that he could bring her down without fear of injuring her mortally.

A grin of impending triumph creased his hideous countenance as Hooja perceived the girl’s increasing exhaustion. His great lungs and mighty, animal-like thews could continue the pursuit. No night nor any passage of time could save the haughty Dian from his lust, for the sun hung at its eternal zenith here in Pellucidar, the lost land within the bowels of our planet, and time itself was a meaningless conceit.

Dian’s foot caught beneath the edge of a protruding root, and she pitched headlong to the ground, a tiny gasp of alarm escaping her parted lips at the hideous prospect which she knew full well lay ahead.

Frantically the girl scrabbled about the underbrush, hoping to find a heavy rock or sharp stick with which to repulse her attacker. She might, in the end, be conquered. But it would never be said of her that she had surrendered willingly.

With a roar of triumph Hooja the sly one stood over the supine form of Dian. His spear to her throat, he commanded her to rise.

Before the defiant girl could respond to the demand of her pursuer, the air was shattered by a mighty report. Hooja stood as if transfixed, gazing in disbelief at the dangling shaft of his spear, shattered by the well-aimed projectile of a modern firearm.

Hunter and prey alike raised their eyes to the summit of a nearby boulder, there to perceive the heroic form of a well-made young man clad in khaki riding breeches, high buckled boots, and a tom and discolored white blouse. The remains of this clothing did but little to conceal the rangy muscularity of David Innes, a source of supple and courageous strength that stood in striking contrast to the soft and undeveloped youth who had first penetrated the crust of the earth long ago in the heavily shielded body of Professor Abner Perry’s mechanical prospector.

David was flanked on the one side by the wizened, bespectacled form of that same Abner Perry, and on the other by the hideous leathern-winged presence of a huge female Mahar, one of the disconcertingly silent intelligent flying reptiles whose cities clustered around the land of Sari.

“It is David! I am saved!” cried the cowering Dian.
